Adventures in House Hunting

My way home from my new job takes me right by a house we looked at when we were house hunting back in 2009, so yesterday in my head I was reminiscing about it and some of the other places we looked at.

We looked at a lot of short sales/foreclosures, since we could possibly get a bigger house for less money that way, but most of the ones we saw were in really bad shape. Our realtor told us people got mad and would just trash the house before leaving – and one we looked at I swear had poop smeared on the walls.

Another one we looked at was ok, kind of dark and cramped and the neighborhood was not well taken care of, but it had a large playroom (we always looked for houses with playrooms to turn into a prop/work room). The playroom had a tiny tiny door in the corner, which I thought was cute til I stepped in the room and got really bad vibes from it. Turned around and told Chase, nope, we’re leaving.

But the house I pass now – we called it the 70s house. If you opened up a catalog in 1972 and saw photos of people standing around in bell bottoms in a “modern” house this would be that house. Everything was so 70s – dated, but unusual. The entire back of the house was windows over-looking a golf course, and it had a LIBRARY! In the library there was a metal spiral staircase! It was so cool. But besides the tiny spiral staircase, the only other way upstairs was a tiny cramped stairwell – I have no idea how previous owners got furniture upstairs.

But the house was in really terrible shape. The appliances had been ripped out the kitchen and what was left was absolutely disgusting. They’d also left behind their super-70s curtains in all the rooms LOL So while it was in our price range, it would have been too much money to try to fix everything. So we passed, but did end up with a house the neighborhood over.

I still look for it everytime I drive by, because it could have been so cool.
